Republican mega donor accused of racism, racial profiling by neighborhood resident

PALM BEACH GARDENS - Allegations of racial profiling have surfaced after a resident in the Caloosa Properties neighborhood of Palm Beach Gardens accused Republican donor Donald Hansen and his wife, Doreen, of questioning if he lived in the neighborhood.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Tracey Simmons and his wife, who are African American, have been harassed by neighbors on multiple occasions for several years, including by the Hansen's, on whether or not they live in the neighborhood.

The report indicates on May 19th, Tracy was looking for his guest when he was allegedly followed and flagged down by Doreen Hansen in a White BMW SUV near the neighborhood. Specifically, Doreen alleged Tracy was driving recklessly and inquired if he lived in the area.

It also indicated the Simmons' have lived in the Caloosa Properties neighborhood for three years.

According to a letter written by Tracy Simmons to the Board Members and Directors of Caloosa Properties, Doreen asked "Do you live here" and accused Simmons of trespassing before threatening to call the police.

A verbal argument ensued, and Doreen called Donald Hansen, a Board of Directors member of the neighborhood. The officer also noted Doreen believed Tracy "seemed dangerous" over his yelling and conversation with her.

After calling her husband, Don Hansen arrived in his car and allegedly stated he had never seen Tracy or his wife in the neighborhood. Both then requested Simmons confirm his address via his driver's license, but the officer informed the Hansen's he did not suspect Tracey of a crime.

According to campaign finance reports, Donald Hansen has donated $500 to House District 94 Democratic Candidate Rachelle Litt, despite being registered as a Republican. Litt is running against Republican candidate Meg Weinberger for the seat in November's election.

The seat is currently held by Rep. Rick Roth, R-West Palm Beach, who is term-limited.

The police report noted Tracy later provided his address, which confirmed he lived in the neighborhood. The Simmons' believe race played a major factor in the incident, which includes previous encounters by the family of racial profiling.

The incident was investigated by the Caloosa Properties Owners Association and President James Bishop.

"We take these allegations of discrimination very seriously and are committed to investigate and taking appropriate action, remedial and proactive, to minimize the chances of similar events reoccurring," Bishop said. "Racism, in any form, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in the Caloosa community."

According to one of Litt’s recent social media postings, she says ,“There is no place for antisemitism, racism, or any form of hatred in Florida.”
