Rep. David Borrero highlights GOP registration margin, Hispanic edge in Miami-Dade

DORAL, Fla. - Rep. David Borrero, R-Doral, shared a post Saturday that conveyed Miami-Dade County's voter registration margin among Democrats to Republicans, including strong support from Hispanic Republicans, ahead of November's general election.

As of Oct. 1, Republicans had closed the voter registration gap to Democrats in Miami-Dade by about 45,000 votes. Specifically, Democrats held a 518,822 to 473,323 lead in the county.

Within the gap, Borrero also emphasized the margin among Hispanics in Miami-Dade County. At roughly 70% of the county population, voter registrations among Hispanic Republicans neared 360,000 to Democrats' 227,000 voters.

In addition, over 309,000 Hispanic voters were listed as having no party affiliation (NPAs). Hispanic independents also made up nearly 16,000 voters.

"Only a short time before Dade County becomes SOLID RED," Borrero said.

Originally elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2020, Borrero's claim of a GOP shift in Miami-Dade County can be backed up by recent election trends.

In 2016, former President Donald Trump lost to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by 30 points in Miami-Dade County. Four years later, Trump lost to former Vice President Joe Biden by just about seven points, or a 23-point shift over two election cycles.

During the 2018 Florida gubernatorial election, Republican candidate Ron DeSantis lost to Democratic candidate Andrew Gillum in Miami-Dade County by 21 points. DeSantis went on to defeat Gillum by .04 percent statewide, or about 32,000 votes.

In 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis defeated Democratic candidate Charlie Crist in Miami-Dade by 11 points. It also was the first time a Republican governor won the county since Jeb Bush in 2002.

DeSantis went on to defeat Christ by 19 points statewide, or over 1.5 million votes. Helped by a strong showing in Miami-Dade County, DeSantis went from a narrow win to comfortable victory in four years.
