Gaetz to Introduce Bill Ensuring States Can Clean Voter Rolls

Share

The Biden-Harris Administration is suing the state of Virginia for attempting to remove non-citizens from its voter rolls, prompting Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to introduce a bill ensuring that states have the right to clean their voter rolls at any time.

On Friday, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against the Commonwealth of Virginia for supposedly clearing names off state voter rolls within 90 days of an election, which is illegal under federal law.

However, Governor Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) issued an August executive order requiring daily inspection of the non-citizens list at the state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with registered voter rolls. People are given two weeks to prove their citizenship before their voter registration is removed, taking approximately 6,300 names off the lists between January 2022 and July 2024.

The DOJ's lawsuit alleges that this system has removed the voter registration of people who had previously proven their citizenship, and more than two weeks are needed for people to prove their citizenship.

Rep. Gaetz's "National Motor Voter Clarification Act" asserts that "all Americans expect, and the Constitution allows: that states can remove illegal aliens from their voter rolls at any time," and thus seeks to make this clear in the U.S. Code.

"Last week, the Biden-Harris DOJ turned its fire on Governor Youngkin of Virginia, suing to stop him from removing illegal aliens from the Virginia voter rolls.

I agree with the Governor that removing non-Americans from voter rolls is 'common sense and constitutional,' which is why I am introducing the 'National Motor Voter Clarification Act.' My bill will ensure Governors are allowed to do their jobs and remove illegal aliens from the voter rolls without fear of being targeted by the Biden-Harris Justice Department. It's telling that the only 'election integrity' work the Biden-Harris Department of Justice seems interested in is ensuring maximal turnout for people who can't even legally vote!" said Rep. Gaetz.

In July, the Florida Congressman teamed up with Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) to demand the DOJ prosecute cases of non-citizens and illegal aliens attempting to register to vote, including 1,600 cases in Georgia.

"There appear to have been few prosecutions…and there is no indication that you have been pursuing cases in places like Georgia and Ohio where aliens have been caught registering or voting," said Gaetz and Sen. Scott.
