Gaetz Introduces Bill Removing Tax Exemptions from NGOs Enabling Border Crisis

Share

Part of what allows the border crisis to continue are the non-government organizations (NGOs) that help bring illegal aliens into the country, which Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has sought to halt by introducing legislation removing these organizations' tax-exempt status.

Rep. Gaetz named the bill the "Helping Americans by Restricting Resources to Immigrant Services (HARRIS) Act," clearly designed to poke fun at Vice President Kamala Harris (D) for her role as "border czar" and for allowing the crisis to continue unabated.

"NGOs and non-profits that enable the Biden-Harris administration's mass-migration policies – by focusing primarily on providing assistance to those who have broken federal immigration law – should not be receiving tax breaks. My legislation, the HARRIS Act, will strip tax-exempt status from organizations aiding and abetting the U.S. border invasion. If non-profits want special treatment under our tax code, they should focus on doing genuine charity for genuine Americans, not illegal aliens," said Rep. Gaetz in his press release.

Cosponsors of the bill include Representatives Randy Weber (R-TX), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), and Andy Biggs (R-AZ), the latter notably introducing a bill in mid-September named the KAMALA (an acronym for "Keeping Aid for Municipalities and Localities Accountable") Act, which would deny federal funds to state-level initiatives seeking to house illegal aliens.

The bill is effectively a companion to the Florida Congressman's "Blocking Assistance and Resources to Restrict Illegal Entry and Residency (BARRIER) Act" introduced at the beginning of October. This act would pull federal funding from the same NGOs aiding and abetting the border crisis, creating a one-two punch against these groups to discourage their activities.

"NGOs and non-profits serve as the foot soldiers for the Biden-Harris administration's mass-migration policies by helping illegal aliens cross the border and stay here for years after illegally. My legislation, the BARRIER Act, will strip these organizations of their federal funding, which can be used to assist those who break federal law. The federal government should not be financing the destruction of its own country," Gaetz previously stated.
