President Joe Biden (D) has generated controversy after calling Trump supporters "garbage." Responding to Tony Hinchcliffe's controversial joke about Puerto Rico, President Biden made the controversial comment, which has incited condemnation from Republicans. The president has since then taken to social media to clarify his comments, but Republicans aren't convinced.
The Republican Party of Florida released a statement denouncing President Biden's comment.
Dubbing him "Bumbling Biden," the Florida GOP reminded the incumbent president that he was referring to "easily half the population of the United States of America - and the electorate he represents."
In 2016, then-presidential candidate Secretary Hillary Clinton (D) called Trump supporters a "basket of deplorables," which political pundits argued hurt her campaign. Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power (R) believes that President Biden's comment puts Vice President Kamala Harris' (D) campaign in a similar situation.
"Biden calling Trump supporters 'garbage' is 'deplorables' 2.0.," Chairman Power expressed, calling on Vice President Harris to urge President Biden to apologize.
Shortly after making the comment, President Biden released a statement on X, clarifying that he was responding to Tony Hinchcliffe's joke. However, Republicans like Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) isn't buying it.
During a campaign stop in Green Bay Wisconsin, Rep. Donalds responded to President Biden's comment.
"Barack Obama, once upon a time, he called us 'bitter clingers.' Hillary Clinton has called us 'deplorables.' Kamala Harris refers to us as 'fascists,' and Joe Biden called us 'garbage,'" Rep. Donalds said. "But we are none of those things. We are red-blooded Americans, and we're taking American back in 6 days."
Yesterday, during a rally in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, President Donald Trump (R) also responded to the president's comment, saying that Trump supporters "are far higher quality." President Trump also traveled to his rally in Wisconsin in a garbage truck "in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden."
Vice President Harris was asked about President Biden's comment, and she distanced herself from his remark, saying that she "strongly [disagrees] with any criticism of people based on who they vote for."
