Mucarsel-Powell Says Defeating Scott Will Bring Women 'Representation That They Deserve'

Share

Miami Beach—During the  2024 Miami-Dade County Democratic Party Blue Gala, former Congresswoman and senatorial candidate, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, stated that if she defeats Sen. Rick Scott (R) in the upcoming November general election, her victory would finally bring in the “representation” that every woman and “every single Latina” deserves.

During her remarks at the sold-out event at the Miami Beach convention center, Mucarsel-Powell spoke about her there was currently only one “Latina” in the U.S. Senate, Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NV).

“There is only one Latino right now serving in the US Senate, so that will be a 100% increase. It will mean that every single Latina, and every woman in this country, will have the representation that they deserve,” said Mucarsel-Powell.

Is Mucarsel-Powell in doubt of the current Democratic-controlled Senate leadership, and is saying that it has not adequately represented women?

Mucarsel-Powell teed off on Sen. Scott,  saying that the former two-term governor of Florida and sitting U.S. senator has been stripping Floridians away from their freedoms.

“The freedom to live in safety. The freedom to retire with dignity. And the freedom to make our own decisions about our bodies…Rick Scott has been chipping away at those freedoms for the last 14 years,” said Mucarsel-Powell, who repeated the Democratic talking points that Republicans like Sen. Scott were “extremists” and a “threat.”

With Scott currently running to replace Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Mucarsel-Powell took a swipe at him over his campaign to lead the potential Republican majority in the Senate.

“Can you just imagine a world where one will actually miss Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader,” added Mucarsel-Powell.

The former congresswoman from Miami-Dade County also used the opportunity to equate Governor Ron DeSantis’ Florida to the “authoritarian” governments like that of Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro.

“Florida has been ground zero for these anti-American, attacks against civil rights to the suppression of the vote and our voice, We are witnessing a very dangerous tend towards the authoritarian rule that we have seen in Latin America,” she added.

Scott has been relentlessly painting Mucarsel-Powell as a socialist over her past very pro-Progressive ‘Squad’ voting record and the fact that several progressive state legislators have endorsed her senatorial campaign. In addition, Scott has criticized Mucarsel-Powell for refusing to condemn anti-semitic votes the House "Squad" has taken in the past.

Scott and Mucarsel-Powell are currently in a statistical tie according to the latest public opinion poll taken by The Hill newspaper, but the Real Clear Politics average of polls has Scott leading Mucarsel-Powell by 4 percentage points.
