DSCC Sees Florida as a ‘Pickup Opportunity’

Since Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) assumed office, the state has grown decidedly red. However, Democrats aren’t buying it. In the latest round of political moves, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is setting its sights on the sunshine state. According to DSCC Chairman Michigan Senator Gary Peters (D), Florida is a ‘pickup opportunity’ for Democrats.

Florida Senator Rick Scott’s (R) senate seat is facing a challenger in former Florida Rep. Debbie Mucarsel Powell (D). While the former might feel confident about his odds of winning reelection, Senator Peters is questioning the assumption. Polls indicate that Senator Scott is leading, but Democrats are hopeful that the November election will yield some surprises.

According to the DSCC, Florida could have surprising results in the election.

Earlier this week, Senator Peters reiterated to reporters that Florida was "increasingly in play," adding that Democrats had picked up "momentum." However, he did note that the DSCC would need to "see how it goes" when it comes to investing financial resources into TV ads in the Senate race.

"Decisions as to what resources are going to go in is going to be made in real-time and are likely to evolve," he said to POLITICO during a breakfast in Washington that was hosted by The Christian Science Monitor. If the "momentum" continues, then the DSCC is "likely" to spend some money in Florida.

Why the need to spend this money in the state? Well, because according to Senator Peters, "you need to be on TV in a big way" to win in Florida.

Last month, Rep. Mucarsel-Powell launched her "75 Stop Tour" to combat Senator Scott.

On the campaign trail, Rep. Mucarsel-Powell maintains that the race between her and the former governor of Florida is too close to call, and she intends to oust the Florida senator on November 5th.
