Trump v DeSantis?: Trump Endorses David Shoar Against DeSantis-Backed Tom Leek in SD 7

TALLAHASSEE, FL—David Shoar, a St. Johns Sheriff and Republican hopeful for Florida's newly vacant SD 7 seat, scored former President Donald Trump's endorsement in the heated primary Sunday afternoon, a surprising move once again placing Trump at odds with Governor Ron DeSantis—who endorsed current Rep. Tom Leek for the post.

"David Shoar is a tremendous America First Patriot who is running to represent the incredible people of Florida's 7th State Senate District! A Gulf War Army Veteran, David bravely served our Country and has continued to fight to protect our Communities as St. Johns County Sheriff," Trump posted to his right-wing social media site Truth Social. He insisted that Shoar would take on Trump's biggest issues: securing the border, lowering inflation, protecting the "always-under-siege" Second Amendment, and supporting the military.

Trump seemingly addressed and lauded Shoar for endorsing him over DeSantis for President, referencing when the Florida Governor launched his 2023 fizzled-out presidential campaign.

Leek, on the other hand, was among 100 state lawmakers who backed DeSantis for President, though after he suspended his campaign, Leek soon backed Trump and even served as one of his delegates at the Republican National Convention.

"David Shoar, who is 100% MAGA, and has been with us from the very beginning, has my Complete and Total Endorsement - HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!" Trump wrote.

Meanwhile, Leek has scored the endorsements of Congressmen Mike Waltz and Cory Mills, Sen. Rick Scott, 12 state legislators, Attorney General Ashley Moody, CFO Jimmy Patronis, Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nunez, and DeSantis. Aside from Trump, Shoar has most notably gained the support of Congressmen John Rutherford and Greg Steube.

Leek has raised over $640,000 and spent $550,000 compared to Shoar's raised $68,700 and nearly $23,000 spent.

Shoar, Leek, and Republican Gerry James, a former athlete, will face off in the Aug. 20 Republican Primary. The winner will take on Democrat George ‘T’ Hill, a millionaire and transgender woman, on November 5th in the heavy-red district, located just north of Orlando.
