With the 2024 Democratic National Convention happening this week in Chicago, Planned Parenthood is making its voice and objective known as the event kicks off with a bus offering abortion medication, free vasectomies, and other contraceptives. Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL), alongside Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), derided this apparent celebration of "destruction" in recent comments to The Floridian, saying he wished "we were celebrating goodness."
Fox News reported that the Planned Parenthood Great Rivers of St. Louis would offer free abortion-inducing medications, contraceptives, and vasectomies through a bus at the DNC in Chicago, with the latter procedure supposedly already having a waiting list.
"I think it is very strange that at the DNC, they are doing mobile abortions and mobile vasectomies. I wish they had a mobile booth for adoption," Rep. Gaetz told The Floridian, "I wish we were celebrating goodness and actually trying to help other humans live better lives rather than celebrating this sense of destruction, whether the Democrats are destroying unborn life or destroying businesses."
The Florida Congressman's remark about "destroying businesses" appeared to reference reports of Chicago business owners boarding up their windows and doors ahead of the Convention as approximately 100,000 protesters, primarily associated with the pro-Palestine movement, are supposedly expected to appear throughout the four-day event. Police presence for the DNC has been notably heavy, and the United Center has been fenced off to prevent breaching by the protesters.
"There seems to be a real negativity around that when our preference would be that you would favor adoption over abortion as a political strategy," Gaetz concluded.
Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) recently sent out a mailer rallying support for Democrats by claiming that Republicans under former President Donald Trump would ban the "human right" of abortion.
As The Floridian noted, however, no explicit definition of abortion as a human right exists, for the United Nations Human Rights Committee in 2018 said, "States parties must provide safe, legal, and effective access to abortion where the life and health of the pregnant woman or girl is at risk and where carrying a pregnancy to term would cause the pregnant woman or girl substantial pain or suffering, most notably where the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest or is not viable," while also stipulating countries can regulate voluntary terminations of pregnancy.
