MILWAUKEE, WI—Marco Rubio and Byron Donalds, two Florida Republicans once thought to be potential Vice Presidential running mates for Donald Trump, spoke at a breakfast event on the fourth and final day of the Republican National Convention where they trashed President Biden's seemingly lessened mental state and the "in shambles" Democrats.
"I don't usually feel bad for the Democratic party, but...these guys are a mess," Sen. Rubio told the Milwaukee onlookers. He referenced what he, other Republicans, and many Democrats see as Biden's mental decline, which Florida Governor Ron DeSantis likened to the movie "Weekend at Bernie's".
"The Democratic Party is in shambles," Rep. Donalds agreed, juxtaposing the "high-energy" Republican convention with the "radical" Democrats coming apart at the seams. He argued that the reason some congressional Democrats, liberal columnists, and many donors have called on Biden to step down from the race is not because they're "upset" with Biden or his perceived cognitive function, but because Biden's mental state has "exposed them for lying to the American people" and "putting their agenda first."
He claimed the Party had lied, gaslit, and intimidated people into believing that Democrats are "the only ones who care about the lives of the American people...in a very succinct and bumper-sticker way," without putting policy where their mouths are. The media, he says, was "exposed as being the propaganda machine we all know them to be," so all-in-all: "Joe Biden must go and they're going to try to push someone else on us."
California Rep. Adam Schiff is the latest leading Democrat to publicly ask the President to recuse himself from the race and pave the way for Vice President Kamala Harris, adding his voice to calls from nineteen other congressional members. If anonymous ABC News sources are to be believed, prominent Reps. Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and Hakeem Jeffries have all privately expressed that Biden should bow out.
Biden says no.
That firm "no"—maintained for weeks following his disastrous debate performance that first kicked off liberal worries—showed signs of shakiness, however, after he said in a pre-taped BET interview that he would consider dropping out if he were diagnosed with a medical condition.
On Wednesday, the White House announced the President had tested positive for COVID and would return to Delaware to isolate.
The RNC will end tonight with a speech from Trump as he is officially made the Republican nominee. Democrats, meanwhile, are planning an early virtual roll call sometime between August 1st and 7th to nominate Biden; this will ensure he qualifies for the Ohio ballot.
The in-person convention is still on and will take place from August 19th to 22nd.
"Nothing would make me happier than seeing...[Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried] have a nice quiet sob next to Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow," Donalds concluded.
