Scott and Colleagues Commemorate Three Year Anniversary of Historic Cuban Protests

Share

On July 11, 2021, thousands of Cubans took to the streets to protest the island’s civil, political, and economic decay at the hands of the Communist Castro Regime.

The regime quashed the protests with brute force, arbitrary detentions, and internet and cell service blackouts.

Now, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R), supported by Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Ted Cruz (R-TX), introduced a resolution to commemorate the participants of such protests.

Namely, the resolution honors the protestors for standing “in the face of brutal harassment, beatings, and torture…demanding access to their fundamental rights to life, dignity, and freedom.”

Similar protests have sprouted across the country since the July 11 demonstrations.

Last March, thousands of Cubans publicly expressed their disdain for the present communist regime’s repression of fundamental freedoms and the island’s dire economic situation.

The Cuban government responded as expected, freezing cell phone service to stymie future protests and curtail ongoing ones. Daily blackouts and food shortages have plagued the nation for years while political dissenters are jailed and abused.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel blamed the ongoing US embargo for the crisis in his country and criticized US statements as “interventionist.”

Senator Scott responded to Cuban protestors’ woes by introducing the DEMOCRACIA Act, which would levy sanctions on Cuban officials and provide access to uncensored internet on the island.

Senator Scott called for fellow legislators to assist in passing his DEMOCRACIA Act.

Doing so would “send a clear message that the U.S. will lead the freedom-loving nations of the world in the defense of human rights in Cuba and Latin America,” said Scott.
