Despite being a priority candidate for receiving former President Donald Trump’s Vice President nomination, US Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) was not selected.
President Trump instead chose Ohio Senator JD Vance (R) and announced the decision during the Republican National Convention (RNC).
Senator Vance, who used to ridicule Trump, began to more closely align himself with Trump’s ideas and policies in recent years and has become one of the president’s most vocal supporters.
Upon learning of Trump’s decision, Senator Rubio congratulated Vance and urged conservatives to unify around the Trump-Vance ticket.
“JD Vance is a fantastic choice,” said Rubio. “Americans will soon see this is an incredibly intelligent and talented man who is completely committed to making America great again.”
Rubio had been rumored to potentially receive the VP nomination last week during a Trump rally in Doral.
Senator Rubio had supported President Trump throughout the latter’s campaign.
However, Rubio amplified his pro-Trump messaging after the latter secured the Republican presidential nomination.
Political insiders had even predicted Trump would select Rubio as his VP for the November 2024 elections, citing his support among Hispanics as a supporting factor.
Polls have repeatedly demonstrated Rubio’s supremacy over Democrats vis-a-vis hispanic voters, who support the former’s policies on immigration and the economy.
Given Trump’s choice, however, it seems he believes it will be more beneficial for the campaign and the country if Rubio continues in the Senate while Vance assumes the Vice Presidency.
