The attempt on former President Donald Trump's life on Saturday has left America reeling, with Congress demanding answers and accountability. Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) discussed the opening of investigations in a recent appearance on Fox and Friends First, suggesting House Republicans established a "J13" select committee to determine how much anti-Trump rhetoric from Democratic officials incited the violence.
Rep. Mills began by criticizing President Biden's Sunday night address, calling for unity "a day late and a dollar short." After all, the Florida Congressman noted that Biden had recently said that Trump needs to be "put in the bullseye."
"And so this type of rhetoric was enough for when President Trump said 'go home peacefully,' and the January 6th incident occurred, they immediately said he was inciting violence, but yeah, they do not hold themselves accountable for what happened on July 13th. So I think that while it is nice for him to talk about unity, he needs to talk to his own party about why they are continuing to try and go ahead and say things like 'Nazi' or that [Trump] is a fascist or that he is going to destroy democracy or that we must eliminate him. I mean, these are all comments that were made that have contributed to what happened on July 13th," Mills continued.
Host Todd Piro played clips from various Democratic officials demonstrating Mills' point, including Biden's comments that Trump was "a threat to this nation," among other hyperbolic statements from figures such as Vice President Kamala Harris and Hillary Clinton, asking if such rhetoric would be "business as usual" after the Republican National Convention this week.
"I do not think that the Republican Party, as the majority in the House, should allow it to be business as usual. If they were able to hold a J6 unselect committee as a result of things that President Trump had said that they claim incited violence, how did any of the clips you just played not actually do the same? I think we should be looking at potentially calling our own J13 select committee and having our own investigation into the whereabouts of the dangerous rhetoric that was being said. It did incite violence and nearly resulted in the assassination of a former president," Mills concluded.
