Widespread condemnation continues to pour in against Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro after he declared himself the victor in yesterday's presidential election. According to the polls, Maduro trailed by close to 40 points, but in the early hours of this morning, Maduro announced that he had won reelection. In response to the election results, Florida Democrats have condemned the Maduro Regime, calling for "an internationally supervised recount."
Secretary of State Antony Blinken shared that the United States has "concerns" over the election results, and world leaders from the likes of Costa Rica and Uruguay have already announced that they do not accept Madura's announcement. In Florida, Republicans from across the sunshine state have denounced the announced results, and now Florida Democrats are joining in their condemnation.
Taking to social media to release the statement, Florida Democrats addressed that the exit polls from yesterday's presidential election in Venezuela "showed a clear advantage for the opposition party."
"The Florida Democratic Party unequivocally condemns Nicolas Madura's attempt to steal the Venezuelan presidential election," the statement read. "Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of the democratic process, and the will of the Venezuelan people - clearly expressed in yesterday's exit polls - must prevail."
"Millions of Venezuelans went to the polls yesterday to exercise their right to vote, and any attempt to disrespect their voices is an outrage," the statement continues. "We're proud to stand with Venezuelans in Venezuela, Florida, and beyond as they fight for a free democratic society, and we call on President Biden and world leaders to demand transparency and accountability for Maduro and his administration - starting with an internationally supervised recount."
In a memo from Venezuela's opposition campaign, they declared the voting results a "FRAUD," adding that the "burden of proof" is on the Venezuelan government.
“Months will go by and they will not be able to deliver it to us. That is what we have to achieve, demanded by us and by the international community,” the memo notes.
