President Joe Biden is allegedly preparing to propose fundamental changes to the Supreme Court after a weekend call with Congressional Progressive Caucus Democrats.
Such changes would allegedly include ending lifetime appointments and restructuring the court’s ethics code.
Biden’s push responds to a series of conservative-favoring decisions by the court.
Among these are granting Trump criminal immunity for actions executed during his tenure, scaling back bureaucratic power, and rejecting a national right to abortion.
It is unclear, however, whether Biden’s alleged proposals are his own creation or a concession to progressives following the latter’s support for Biden after other Democrats called for him to step aside.
While the Supreme Court’s conservative majority has mostly ruled in accordance with Republican desires, not all decisions have favored conservatives’ wishes.
In late June, for example, the Supreme Court curtailed Second amendment rights.
In an 8-1 decision, the court ruled in US v Rahimi that individuals believed to pose credible threats to others may be deprived of their right to own a firearm.
The case began after Zackey Rahimi, a Texas resident, was subjected to a restraining order that specifically barred him from obtaining a gun.
Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the opinion of the court, stating that “an individual found by a court to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another may be temporarily disarmed.”
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on Biden’s planned reforms during a Monday press conference.
Secretary Pierre said “she did not want to get ahead of the President,” and would let him speak on the issue when he saw fit.
