Scott Leads Senators in Condemning Garland for Complicity in Convicting Trump

Former President Donald Trump's unprecedented conviction in New York City on 34 felony charges continues to draw ire, condemnation, and outrage from Republicans. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) recently spearheaded a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, damning the conviction and the Biden Administration's apparent complicity in allowing the verdict to pass.

"The conviction of President Trump in Manhattan is nothing short of the evisceration of the American judicial process," Sen. Scott's letter began bluntly, accusing Democrat prosecutors of being so driven to convict the former President that they destroyed several key concepts of the American legal process such as due process and knowing what crimes the defendant stands accused of violating.

"Even if we disregard Judge Juan Merchan's financial contributions to Democratic candidates and causes, the prosecutors were permitted to convert alleged time-lapsed business records misdemeanors into felonies because the records violations were supposedly in furtherance of a second crime. Yet, even after the jury rendered its verdict, we do not know what constitutes that specific second crime," Sen. Scott continued, noting that due process cannot logically exist when the defendant does not know what they are on trial for.

The letter then accuses the Biden Administration of complicity in convicting Trump, as District Attorney Alvin Bragg had no legal authority to enforce Federal election law, something the Federal government would not allow. Nor did any of the charges violate the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) "unless the defendant is Donald Trump."

"We condemn this show trial, not just because it marks the attempt to imprison a leader of the loyal opposition, but because it threatens the existence of due process of law, without which a constitutional republic dedicated to the protection of individual liberty is not possible," Scott concluded.

Scott's letter comes a day after Congress voted to hold AG Garland in contempt of Congress for his refusing to hand over the audio file of Special Counsel Robert Hur's interview with President Biden regarding the classified documents scandal.
