Firefighters from across Florida’s 27th Congressional District were recognized at an award ceremony hosted by US Representative Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL).
The firefighters, 36 in total, were praised for their heroic and brave acts while serving their communities.
The firemen honored serve in the fire departments of Miami-Dade County, Coral Gables, Key Biscayne, and the City of Miami.
Representative Salazar presented the awards underscoring the perils of serving as a firefighter in a sprawling urban city like miami.
“Miami is one of the largest and most populous cities in the country, and our first responders are always on the front lines to make sure our community is safe whenever danger arises,” said Salazar. “These firefighters have extraordinarily difficult and dangerous jobs, and we are here to recognize and award them for their exemplary leadership in the line of duty.”
The firefighters were decorated with Certificates of Special Congressional Recognition during the event, which was hosted at the Miami-Dade College Padrón Campus.
Salazar has been involved in supporting previous firefighter legislation efforts, such as the HELPER Act.
The HELPER Act would provide mortgage assistance to firefighters and other first responders as well as elementary school teachers.
Despite having broad bipartisan support, the HELPER Act remains stuck in the House of Representatives.
Another legislative project Salazar is leading that has recently gained media attention is the ‘Dignity Act,’ an effort to reform immigration law.
The nearly 500-page Dignity Act covers border security, asylum claims, illegal immigration, agricultural competitiveness, and the US’ domestic workforce.
Salazar defined the law as “the only viable bill in Congress that (addresses) all aspects of our broken immigration system.”
Since being filed, the bill has gained support from over 35 legislators belonging to both major parties.
