Florida Delegation Leads Bicameral Resolution Condemning Venezuela’s Upcoming ‘Sham’ Elections

Florida’s Congressional leaders are leading a bipartisan and bicameral resolution denouncing Venezuelan Dictator Nicolas Maduro’s manipulation of the upcoming presidential elections.

The resolution is being led by Representatives María Elvira Salazar (R-FL), Carlos A. Giménez (R-FL), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) in the House and Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) in the Senate.

The lawmakers’ resolution characterizes Dictator Maduro’s government as “illegitimate.”

Since becoming Venezuela’s ruler, Maduro has overseen historic poverty rates in the country and been extensively accused of serious criminal activity and human rights abuses.

Maduro’s regime carries a ghastly repertoire of unlawful detainments, extrajudicial killings, tortures, and kidnapping of regime dissidents and political opponents.

Earlier this year, a sliver of hope for political change in Venezuela was extinguished after Maduro barred opposition leaders from participating in the upcoming July presidential elections.

Maduro had committed to permitting free and fair elections in exchange for US sanctions relief but changed course after having already received millions of dollars from oil exports.

In a highly controversial move, President Joe Biden lifted sanctions on Venezuela’s oil and gold sectors in exchange for assurances the country would be committed to holding fair elections.

Now, with the only credible opposition candidate, Maria Corina Machado, having been prohibited from running, Maduro is expected to be proclaimed the winner.

Senator Rubio commented on Maduro’s lack of morals when presenting the resolution.

“The criminal Maduro narco-regime will stop at nothing to maintain its illegitimate grip on power as it continues to target members of the opposition and undermine free and fair elections in Venezuela,” said Rubio. “Our partners worldwide must remain firm in their call for the release of all political prisoners who are currently being tortured by this illegitimate dictatorship.”
