Anniversary of Tragic Florida Building Collapse Commemorated by Florida’s Senators

Share

Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) are commemorating the third anniversary of the Champlain Towers South condominium collapse.

The Senators filed a resolution honoring the deceased from the collapse, survivors, and first responders.

Senators Rubio and Scott announced their resolution via press release.

“Today, we honor the 98 souls lost in the collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside,” said Rubio. “To the brave first responders who assisted in the recovery operations, our community owes you immense gratitude for your selfless bravery.”

One of the largest domestic search and rescue missions in the history of the US occurred in the aftermath of the tower collapse.

Aside from local, state, and federal emergency teams, international rescue crews and emergency support organizations from Israel and Mexico also responded to the site to aid in the search and recovery efforts.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis similarly commemorated the building collapse via X.

“Three years ago, we lost 98 lives in the Champlain Towers tragedy in Surfside," said Governor DeSantis. "Today, we continue to honor their legacy and pray for the families grieving their loved ones.”

As analyzed by The Floridian’s Liv Caputo, the tower’s collapse prompted new state construction regulations.

Caputo reports engineers and architects insisted that Florida needed to replace its 40-year inspection rule with a 20-year safety review with follow-ups every 7 years.

Consequently, the Florida Legislature passed HB 7069, requiring coastline buildings to undergo an initial inspection 25 years after occupancy and every ten years afterwards.
