Scott Attends Trump Trial, Calls Court Proceedings 'Criminal'

Share

Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) is the first member of the Senate to attend President Donald Trump's (R) criminal trial. Accepting an invitation from Susie Wiles, a senior advisor for President Trump's campaign who also managed the senator's first gubernatorial run, Senator Scott showed his support for the Republican presidential challenger.

In a press briefing regarding his court attendance, Senator Scott shared his thoughts on the trial, saying that it's nothing short of election interfering.

"I'm here because I've known Donald Trump a long time. I knew him before I was governor. I consider him a friend, and what he is going through is just despicable," he said. "It's a crime in this country to use a court system to go after your political opponent. What's happening in this court room is clearly criminal."

Senator Scott is echoing remarks President Trump has made in the past, accusing President Joe Biden (D) of using the justice system to go after President Trump for simply being a "political opponent." Other Republicans have come to President Trump's defense in a similar way, slamming the legal proceedings.

Rep. Debbie Mucarsel Powell (D), who's challenging Senator Scott for his seat, commented on the incumbent Senator's court appearance and accusing him of "sucking up" to President Trump.

"Rick Scott spent his day sucking up to a defendant found liable for sexual abuse," she said in a statement. "It should come as no surprise that the man who oversaw one of the largest Medicare frauds in history would put himself and his own extreme agenda before the people he was elected to represent."

"I'm proud of him for standing up for all of us because, guess what? It's got nothing to do with him. They can go after any one of us if they want to, and you do not have the resources to do it. If they can go after the former president, they can go after you," he warned.
