Senator Marco Rubio/ The Floridian
US Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has sent President Joe Biden a letter requesting the latter reject potential International Criminal Court (ICC) anti-Israel actions.
Senator Rubio, alongside Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and fellow legislators, urged Biden publicly denounce such potential actions.
The ICC is reportedly considering issuing arrest warrants against senior Israeli officials for alleged international crimes.
The ICC is an international tribunal designed to prosecute individuals for the international crimes of Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
ICC prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan has been investigating Israeli and Hamas actions in Palestinian Territories.
Some have called for Prosecutor Khan to issue arrest warrants for Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, which Israel has roundly rejected.
The potential arrest warrants have prompted the mobilization of US lawmakers, Democrat and Republican alike.
US Representative Brian Mast (R-FL) joined Representatives Chip Roy (R-TX), Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and 23 other Republican Representatives to introduce legislation imposing sanctions on the ICC.
Subsequently, Rubio’s letter is the latest legislative initiative countering the ICC’s potential warrants.
Joining Rubio and Rosen were Senators Tim Scott (R-SC), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Dan Sullivan (R-AK).
“It is outrageous that the ICC would make a political calculus to target Israel, which only further undermines the Court’s legitimacy and undercuts efforts to advance peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” reads the letter.
Consequently, the Senators requested President Biden “strongly oppose the ICC’s efforts to target Israel and stand firmly with Israel in the face of the Court’s overreach.”
If the ICC issues arrest warrants for Israeli officials, all 124 states forming part of the ICC would be legally obligated to extradite such individuals if found within their jurisdictions.
