Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL) recently sought to interview former President Donald Trump aide Peter Navarro as he is serving a prison sentence in Miami for contempt of Congress. However, Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters blocked the request, claiming Navarro is "too notorious." This has left the Florida Congressman, along with House Judiciary Chair Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Representative Andy Biggs (R-AZ), deeply frustrated, and they are now demanding Director Peters appear before Congress to explain why.
Additionally, Rep. Gaetz's letter highlighted a March letter to Peters asking Jason Galanis, a former business partner of Hunter Biden and witness in the House impeachment inquiry, was "victim of a pattern of retribution by the Department of Justice in order to prevent my home confinement, which would have allowed full and free access to congressional investigators."
The letter noted that the Bureau of Prisons denied the request to speak about Galanis, prompting the House Judiciary to issue a subpoena.
More recently, in May, Rep. Gaetz sought to speak with Navarro, but the request was denied due to the former Trump aide's "notoriety," as mentioned. Egregiously, "Dr. Navarro has also allegedly been notified that he is not permitted to meet with his attorney."
The BOP's actions have raised questions and cast a shadow of doubt on the Bureau's integrity, suggesting a potential politicization of its operations, as the letter said.
Gaetz spoke about the May incident on the House floor, which he posted to X (formerly Twitter).
"BREAKING: I was informed today by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons that my request to interview @RealPNavarro would be denied. And her reason is that Peter Navarro is "too notorious" to be interviewed by a member of Congress! John Gotti was interviewed in prison. The QAnon Shaman was interviewed in prison. Director Peters HERSELF brought NBC News THROUGH PRISONS to showcase the work of corrections that's being done! This only vindicates the claim made by Peter Navarro that he is being held as a political prisoner," Gaetz tweeted.
