US Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) is leading a group of House Republicans attempting to bestow former President Donald Trump with the Congressional Gold Medal.
Alongside the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award in the U.S.
The GOP representatives filed a bill that, if passed, would award President Trump a Gold Medal for “his exceptional leadership and dedication to strengthening America’s diplomatic relations.”
According to the bill’s sponsors, Trump’s presidency ushered in paradigmatic international relations shifts.
The bill highlights Trump’s role in fostering North Korean friendliness towards the US, brokering the Abraham accords, and preventing war across the globe during his presidency.
“President Trump’s fearless leadership reestablished America as a respected and admired global power," Luna said. "It is time we recognize a president who put our country first and secured global peace through bold diplomacy.”
Supporting the bill are Representatives Mike Waltz (R-FL), Andrew Ogles (R-TN), Randy Weber (R-TX) Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Bob Good (R-VA), Mary Miller (R-IL) and Claudia Tenney (R-NY).
The bill symbolizes the recent surge in Congressional support for Trump, who has even had Republican legislators sit with him during his ongoing judicial trials.
Last week, Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) attended a court hearing with the president, and he issued words of support right after.
Trump was accompanied to court this week by Florida Reps. Byron Donalds (R) and Cory Mills (R) among others.
Chief among Trump’s legal woes are his criminal Hush Money and civil fraud and election interference cases.
Trump has denied wrongdoing in all cases and is fiercely litigating them in court.
