President Donald Trump (R) has announced his position on a national abortion ban. After months of speculation regarding his stance, President Trump has affirmed his support for states voting on their own abortion laws.
In a video posted on social media Monday morning, President Trump shared his support for IVF as well as states determining their abortion laws as long as there are exceptions for rape, the life of the mother, and incest.
He commented that "the states will determine by vote, or legislation, or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land – in this case, the law of the state." "Many states will be different. Many states will have a different number of weeks…at the end of the day it is all about the will of the people," he added.
Last week, President Trump was questioned over Florida's implementation of a 6-week abortion ban, and he responded that he would share his position on the subject soon. His response now comes at a time when abortion registers as a top priority for voters, and according to recent polling, it is the subject that President Joe Biden (D) is leading President Trump on. Moreover, the Biden campaign has launched an effort to flip Florida blue, citing Republicans' stance on abortion rights.
However, President Trump remains optimistic, commenting that "the Republican Party should always be on the side of the miracle of life and the side of mothers, fathers, and their beautiful babies. IVF is an important part of that."
Conservative response to the president's comments hasn't all been supportive as Majorie Dannenfelser, President of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life, shared that she was "deeply disappointed" and that his announcement was a victory for Democrats.
"Saying the issue is ‘back to the states’ cedes the national debate to Democrats who are working relentlessly to enact legislation mandating abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy. If successful, they will wipe out states' rights," Dannenfelser warned.
