Scott Hits Mayorkas With Both Barrels, Asks Why Democrats Prevented Impeachment Trial

House Republicans successfully demanded an impeachment trial for Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas for his handling of the border crisis. However, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) dismissed the trial and called it illegitimate and politicized. However, Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) laid it thick on Sec. Mayorkas in a recent hearing for the 2025 Homeland Security budget, detailed precisely why he believed the trial should have happened, his only question being why the Homeland Security Secretary believed his trial was dismissed.

Sen. Scott did not mince words, beginning by saying, "Secretary Mayorkas, you are the first Cabinet official to be impeached in our country's history. I think it is a sad first for our nation, not because this was not warranted, but because it was completely warranted by your catastrophic failure that has created a wide-open border."

He described talking to Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents and constituents who asked if Sec. Mayorkas cared about the devastation the border crisis has inflicted upon the country, whether in the form of criminal illegal aliens such as the murderer of Laken Riley Jose Ibarra, the thousands of overdose deaths from fentanyl smuggled over the border (and its precursor chemicals subsidized by the Chinese government and sent to Mexico), or the hundreds of terrorists encountered at the border.

"The remote Republican majority in the House, they voted to impeach you for violating your oath of office. Whether you believe that was right or wrong, that happened. You should then have a trial to make your case. But unlike what happened in 2018, when Democrats alone voted to impeach the President [Donald Trump] and Republicans controlled the Senate, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer decided to deny you the ability to defend yourself in a trial," Sen. Scott continued.

The Florida Senator suggested Schumer dismissed the trial for political reasons, either because they sought to protect Mayorkas or "[Schumer] is terrified of the trial exposing your failure to a degree that acquittal would be extremely painful for Democrats to explain to the American public."

Moreover, Scott noted that Democrats voted against a bill prohibiting illegal aliens from flying commercially without a valid ID, even in the wake of the exposure of the Department of Homeland Security's secret flights for over 300,000 migrants, voting against a bill deporting illegals who attack law enforcement, and against the Laken Riley Act.

"So it seems to me that Democrats have no problem voting to keep this border crisis going," Scott noted before asking Mayorkas, "Do you think you are being silenced because Democrats are terrified to defend your record and unable to defend you, or because they do not trust you?"

"Neither, Senator," was all Mayorkas said.
