Florida GOP Calls Amendment 4 "Deceptive" and "Radical"

Share

The November election became more complex this week as Florida voters will decide the future of abortion rights and recreational marijuana in the state. Heading into the 2024 election, abortion was expected to be an important subject for voters, and Democrats have largely been campaigning on the subject. Ahead of the vote for Amendment 4, Florida's Republican Party denounced the Amendment, calling it "deceptive" and "radical."

When news struck that Amendment 4 would be on the Florida ballot in November, Florida Democrats took to social media to celebrate the news.

State Senator Shevrin Jones (D) celebrated the announcement by saying that "this decision belongs with the people of Florida - not politicians."

Florida Rep. Anna V. Eskamani (D) also celebrated the news, sharing that she feels "the tide will turn in Florida come November." Her comments were in reference to the 6 week abortion ban that will come into effect.

However, Florida GOP Chairman Evan Powers (R) released a statement denouncing Amendment 4, calling it "a deceptively worded pro-abortion amendment."

"If passed, it will allow abortions up to 6 months of pregnancy and, thanks to a loophole, even to point of birth," Chairman Powers warned. Subsequently, this would mean that "Florida will become the most pro-abortion state in the southern U.S."

Chairman Powers argues that Florida does not want this and that Republicans will dedicate themselves "to inform voters on the dangers of this amendment."

The Republican chairman also directed criticism at Democratic leadership, expressing that "it is of no surprise that Nikki Fried and the Florida Democrats will be celebrating this radical pro-abortion amendment on the ballot because their extreme agenda knows no bounds."

Democrats have campaigned heavily on abortion rights, and comments have largely been directed at President Donald Trump (R) for the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Despite Democrats feeling hopeful that Amendment 4 will pass in November,
