Conservatives Denounce President Trump's Abortion Stance

As expected, Republicans are sharing mixed responses to President Donald Trump’s (R) position on abortion. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion has become a top priority for voters, And when Abortion is on the ballot,  Democrats fare better in elections.

From the Never Trumpers to the stalwarts in Congress (moderates), conservatives are pushing back against President Trump’s abortion stance.

This week, President Trump made headlines as he announced that abortion laws should be left to the states. Commenting that each state would vote differently, President Trump affirmed that those votes would serve as "the law of the land." However, with Republican lawmakers across the country warning that Democrats are encroaching on human life, President Trump has received backlash over his stance.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham (R) shared his disagreement with President Trump not endorsing a national 15-week abortion ban, arguing instead that leaving it to the states “runs contrary to an American consensus that would limit late-term abortions.”

Vice President Mike Pence (R) also released a statement, calling President Trump's comments "a slap in the face to the millions of pro-life Americans who voted for him in 2016 and 2020." He went on to opine that President Trump's stance is an example of a larger issue in the Republican Party wherein "too many Republican politicians are all too ready to wash their hands of the battle for life."

However, some of President Trump's staunchest supporters have shown support or willingness to accept the stance should they be elected to office.

In Arizona, Senatorial hopeful Kari Lake (R) shared her support on social media, writing on X "I agree with President Trump: do NOT support a federal abortion ban." Similarly, Ohio Senatorial hopeful Benny Moreno (R),  though not endorsing a national abortion ban, has also expressed that he supports states deciding for themselves.

Reagan McCarthy, a spokesperson for the Moreno campaign said that “he’s comfortable with any path forward that ends elective, late term abortions with reasonable exceptions."
