Wasserman Schultz: Hamas 'Needs to Agree' to Six-Week Ceasefire

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) spoke to The Floridian regarding the Israeli-Hamas War that has raged on since Oct. 7, where she reiterated her call

The Florida congresswoman mentioned that “there are negotiations going on” but that Israel is not currently at the table.

“At the moment there are negotiations going on. The most recent information I have is that Israel is not at the table but that they’ve agreed in principle to what the proposal is on the table. I’m not completely privy to the details of that but the contours include a six-week pause and release of hostages in phases,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz.

She continued, “But so far, Hamas hasn’t agreed to the deal and they need to agree to make sure that we can have that temporary pause, release the hostages, and get humanitarian assistance to innocent Palestinian civilians that are victims of Hamas as well.”

Furthermore, it was announced Tuesday that Reps. Wasserman Schultz and Jamie Raskin (D-MD) are working on a bill to ban former President Donald Trump (R) from holding federal office by barring him from appearing on any ballot.

This news comes after the U.S. Supreme Court voted unanimously against the State of Colorado’s attempt to invoke the 14th Amendment to keep President Trump from appearing on the ballot.

In May of 2022, Rep. Wasserman Schultz introduced a similar bill to the 117th Congress.

Wasserman Schultz spoke to The Floridian regarding her and Rep. Raskin’s attempt to change the original bill after the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision.

“It’s an implementing bill, essentially and we’ll have to revise it. Congressman Raskin and I introduced it at the end of last Congress, the end of ’22,” said Rep. Wasserman Schultz. “Essentially, we have a resolution that we’ll file that declares Jan. 6 an insurrection and implementing legislation that establishes a process for disqualifying someone who committed insurrection.”
