US Representative Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) has filed a bill to rename the Federal Post Office located in Key West, Florida, as the "Jimmy Buffett Post Office Building."
The bill comes after Buffett passed away last September.
Representative Gimenez announced the initiative via X, claiming renaming the post office would memorialize a “Florida Keys legend.”
Gimenez lauded Buffett’s efforts to support the Florida Keys community.
“(Buffett) loved Florida and the Keys and dedicated many efforts to protecting the manatees, supporting the Everglades, and safeguarding the island waterways,” said Gimenez via press release.
As reported by The Floridian’s Javier Manjarres, Buffett was also a consistent donor to Democrat lawmakers and progressive initiatives.
Consequently, Democrat lawmakers came out in droves to mourn Buffett’s death.
Democratic lawmakers Reps. Kathy Castor and Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who grew up listening to Buffett and later embraced him as a friend and political supporter, expressed their sorrow over his battle with skin cancer and death.
Similarly, another congressional Democrat, freshman Rep.Maxwell Frost, reminisced about his father’s playing old Buffett songs.
In 2018, Buffett reportedly publicly criticized former President Donald Trump and current US Senator Rick Scott (R-FL).
Buffett changed his “Margaritaville” lyrics to blame Scott for the state’s environmental issues, saying “some people say that there’s a red tide to blame, but I know that it’s all Rick Scott’s fault.”
Similarly, Buffett modified his “Come Monday” lyrics to undermine President Trump’s administration.
Despite Buffett’s comments, Republicans were not deterred from supporting Gimenez’s commemorative bill.
Indeed, Gimenez’s resolution was exclusively cosponsored by nine Floridian Republican representatives.
Among them are Representatives Neal Dunn, Kat Cammack, Bill Posey, Daniel Webster, Gus Billirakis, Scott Franklin, Brian Mast, Mario Diaz-Balart, and Maria Elvira Salazar.
