US Representative Maria Elvira-Salazar (R-FL) called for President Joe Biden to order US forces directly intervene in the ongoing security crisis in Haiti.
Haiti has been rocked by widespread gang violence in recent years, but gang-violence has reached unprecedented levels in the last months.
Representative Salazar criticized President Biden for allegedly allowing the “humanitarian and security crisis to fester in Haiti.”
Salazar recommended the US establish a coalition force with Latin American allies to “restore order and peace” on Haiti.
Democrats have suggested American military presence is unwarranted.
Earlier this month, US Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) claimed the US would not be putting boots on Haitian ground.
“There is a definite need for a security mission,” stated McCormick, “but I don’t believe that we’ll see US troops.”
McCormick claimed the US strategy of indirect assistance centered on having more “culturally competent troops” engage in Haiti.
Kenyan military forces, according to McCormick, would be appropriate for Haiti’s current security needs.
The State Department has pledged an additional $100 million to a security mission and $33 million in humanitarian aid.
Last week, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered state-run planes execute rescue missions to evacuate Americans stranded in Haiti.
This is DeSantis' second time brokering rescue flights to foreign nations. In October, the Florida Governor issued an executive order to retrieve over 700 Americans from war-torn Israel after the terrorist group Hamas slaughtered thousands on October 7th.
Similarly, US Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) recently rescued dozens of American citizens stuck in Haiti.
"With great pride, I announce the successful rescue of another group of Americans from [Port Au Prince], Haiti. Our team extracted 13 Americans, who were volunteers for a children’s ministry, trapped in Haiti. Among them were a 2-month-old baby and a 3-year-old little girl," Rep. Mills said in a statement.
Mills had previously rescued ten American workers at a Haitian orphanage who were unable to depart due to rampant gang-violence.
