The State of Florida has become one of the nation's fastest-growing states, but making sure everyone who moves in has a place to live remains a problem. Representative Maxwell Frost (D-FL) recently announced the securing of $12 million from the Biden Administration for affordable housing and infrastructure, saying it would "make a world of difference for so many working people and families in the Orlando area."
As Rep. Frost described, the $12 million would be distributed to 15 construction projects throughout the Orlando area, including $4.1 million toward the construction of a multi-family apartment building in Eatonville, $1 million for a Multicultural Senior Center in Orange County, and $750,000 going to the City of Orlando for its Community Violence Intervention Project.
Other projects included in the grant would go to the Small House Project in Bithlo and support for infrastructure projects such as bus bay construction for the LYNX Central Station Bus Terminal, creating a thermal energy storage system for Second Harvest Food Bank, and many others.
In his press release, Rep. Frost described how he "came to Congress with a mission to deliver on affordable housing, transportation, and infrastructure issues, and to make our communities a better place where everyone can live and thrive, and I am now proud to say that our team is making these goals a reality."
Additionally, as he optimistically noted, "While this $12 million is going to make a world of difference for so many working people and families in the Orlando area – this is only the beginning. My team is ready to secure and bring home even more money to help change Central Florida for the better."
Earlier this year, in January, Frost and colleague Representative Darren Soto (D-FL) celebrated a grant awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of $5 million for the Orange County Public School System to support the purchase of twenty electric school buses for the area.
Frost said the grant "will help us tackle some of the worst contributors to climate change and help usher in a new era of clean energy for Orange County. With the climate crisis being a clear and present danger to our community and humanity, it is steps like this that help us fight this existential threat."
