Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to have endorsed President Joe Biden (D) for president. During an interview this week, President Putin was asked who he believes would be a better president for the United States, and he shared that President Biden would be the choice.
When asked if President Biden or President Donald Trump (R) would be a better choice for the U.S., President Putin answered “Biden. He is a more experienced, predictable person, a politician of the old school.” However, despite throwing his support behind President Biden, he expressed that he would be willing to work with any U.S. president.
This is the first time that President Putin has commented on the upcoming election, which currently sees President Trump polling ahead of President Biden.
Over the weekend, President Trump attracted some controversy while speaking at a rally in South Carolina. There, President Trump said that he would encourage Russia to do “whatever the hell they want” to any NATO member country that doesn’t meet spending guidelines on defense. In response to his comments, President Biden warned that they send a “dangerous and shocking” signal.
In a speech from the State Dining Room, President Biden questioned, “can you imagine a former president of the United States saying that?” “The whole world heard it. The worst thing is he means it,” President Biden continued.
During President Putin's interview, he commented on growing concerns over President Biden’s mental health, arguing that he disagrees with the growing concern.
“When I met with Biden in Switzerland – true, that was several years, three years ago – people were already saying he wasn’t up to it. I didn’t see anything of the kind,” he commented.
In speaking about President Trump, President Putin commented that President Trump “has been called a non-systemic politician; he has his own view on the topic of how the United States should develop relations with its allies.”
President Trump has since issued a comment on President Putin's endorsement of his rival, calling it a "compliment."
