Luna Files Bill Forcing Lawmakers Supporting Ukraine to Enlist in Military

US Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has filed a bill that would compel all lawmakers advocating for US military support of Ukraine’s war with Russia to enlist in the military. 

The Senators Can Help Underpin Military Engagement and Readiness (SCHUMER) Act , would  require respective legislators to serve on active duty in support of a ‘contingency’ operation.

The contingency operation would last for a minimum of 6 months and would involve direct military action against an enemy of the United States or an opposing military force. 

Representative Luna filed the bill after Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warned failing to fund Ukraine’s defense against Russia could lead to future direct American involvement in the war.

“In honor of Chuck Schumer, I’ll be introducing a bill that will require any politician who advocates for sending American troops to Ukraine to be required to fight on the front lines with them,” said Luna.

While the bill will probably never be seriously considered, it is symbolic of conservatives’ frustration with recent Democrat-led efforts focusing on foreign affairs. 

Earlier this week, the US Senate passed a sweeping $95 billion foreign aid spending bill that would, among other things, fund Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. 

According to CNN, the aid bill contains billions of dollars to support Ukraine and for security assistance for Israel, as well as humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.

Many congressional Republicans have refused to support measures providing aid for US allies due to the current impasse between Democrats and Republicans over the border. 

Aside from granting millions for refugee and immigrant arrival social services, recent aid bills have not included any immigration or border enforcement measures. 

Consequently, House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson Mike Johnson (R-LA) has confirmed he will halt the Senate foreign aid bill from reaching the floor for a vote. 

Speaker Johnson stated he would not be entertaining a bill that a majority of Republican Senators opposed. 

Despite alleged pressure from former President Donald Trump to do otherwise, 22 Senate Republicans voted in favor of the spending package. 

The Republican Senators who voted in favor of the bill included Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Chuck Grassley (IA), and others.
