Florida Democrats Urge Biden to Reign in on Transgender License Ban

Share

Although Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) may be out of the 2024 presidential race, the "Culture War" is far from over.  Florida Democrats are now asking President Joe Biden to block the Trans license ban in Florida.

The DeSantis Administration has caught flack for disallowing Floridians from using their gender on their government-issued IDs that reflect their gender identity.  The DeSantis administration has made it so that state-issued licenses reflect a Floridian's biological sex.

Critics have called the move, "an ongoing campaign to make Florida uninhabitable and unsafe for transgender individuals."  However, the DeSantis Administration has argued that it is a legitimate distinction, as gender and sex are two different things.

Deputy Executive Director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Robert Kynoch, on Friday sent a memo outlining the changes to county tax collectors.  The memo stated that allowing people to change their gender on licenses and ID cards does not abide by the law and, "has historically been understood as a synonym for 'sex,' which is determined by innate and immutable biological and genetic characteristics."

Florida's Democratic congressional delegation has called on President Joe Biden (D) to reign in on the issue and stop Florida from the ID practice.  Florida Democrats have argued Biden can fight DeSantis on the issue under the Federal Real ID Act.

The Federal Real ID Act is legislation passed into law by Congress that increased regulations for a national standard to fight against terrorism.  This push is historic as this is the first time an entire state's Democratic congressional delegation has requested the administration intervene to prevent discrimination within the state against transgender individuals.
