Representative Byron Donalds (R-FL) has announced that he is traveling to the Hawkeye State to support former President Donald Trump (R) at the Iowa Caucuses.
Despite the near-zero temperatures with nasty winds that make it feel like -10 (or worse), the Naples, Florida representative is making the trip to back up his endorsement.
“Iowa, I’ll be leaving an 80-degree Naples, FL, for your beautiful (yet frigid) state in support of the people’s president, Donald J. Trump, for the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Iowa is Trump Country, and I can’t wait to see you all. #Trump2024” said Rep. Donalds on social media.
President Trump currently holds a gargantuan 34-point lead over former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley (R-SC) and Gov. DeSantis according to FiveThirtyEight.
Rep. Donalds endorsed the former president in April of 2023, about seven weeks before Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) launched his campaign for the White House.
“I am honored to endorse President Donald J. Trump for President in 2024, and I ask my fellow Americans to join me today,” said Donalds.
He has appeared as a candidate on the vice president shortlist for President Trump. Should he be selected, there is a worry constitutionally, however, about whether two candidates from the same state can be elected on the same Presidential ticket.
In 2000, eventual President George Bush picked Dick Cheyne to be his running mate. They both are from Texas, but Cheyne changed his residency to Wyoming just days before the election to avoid any possibility of having to forfeit the Lone Star State’s votes.
The Bush-Cheney ticket ended up winning one of – if not the – closest election ever.
Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution states that U.S. Representatives need to be at least 25 years of age, a citizen for at least seven years, and “be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.”
If Donalds were to be selected, it is possible that he would have to step down from his seat in the House and change his residential status to somewhere outside Florida before the election in order to avoid possibly losing Florida’s 30 electoral votes.
