Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) is reaffirming his endorsement for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) as president. As Governor DeSantis prepares to take on California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) in a debate, Rep. Roy is directing a political swipe at President Donald Trump (R) for not debating in the Republican primary race.
President Trump has made it clear that he feels he doesn’t need to debate the other Republican challengers. In fact, President Trump has argued that the primary race should immediately end given that he is far surpassing the rest of the candidates in terms of polling.
However, as Governor DeSantis has reiterated, polls don’t elect lawmakers, and the show must go on.
Over the weekend, Rep. Roy took to social media to reaffirm his support for Governor DeSantis, calling him the perfect candidate to lead Republicans to victory in the 2024 election.
“I stand 100% alongside this wonderful woman & her husband, Ron DeSantis, because they are truly good & decent people. America needs THAT again,” Rep. Roy wrote on social media, sharing images of Governor DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis campaigning in Iowa.
“I proudly fight for Ron DeSantis to be our GOP nominee for President because it’s time to Meet the Moment and WIN Again,” he wrote.
Rep. Roy further highlighted that Governor DeSantis is ready to debate Governor Newsom and that “Trump is not showing up to debates.”
The rivalry between President Donald Trump (R) and Rep. Roy dates back to Rep. Roy opposing President Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election. President Trump did not endorse Rep. Roy in his pursuit of becoming the chairman of the House Republican Conference position in 2021. Instead, President Trump endorsed New York Rep. Elise Stefanik (R), who ended up winning the race.
Governor DeSantis will face Governor Newsom in a debate on November 30th. The debate will be moderated by Fox News’ Sean Hannity.
