New Florida Bill Bans Students from High School Sports for Criminal Misconduct

Representative Berny Jacques (R-Seminole) and Senator Nick DiCeglie (R-Indian Rocks Beach) filed HB 545 / SB 530 – Florida High School Athletic Association Student Eligibility Requirements.  This legislative measure will bar students who commit certain criminal actions from participating in high school sports.

Students convicted or held responsible in adult court for homicide, sexual battery, or lewd and lascivious offenses would not be able to participate in high school athletics.

“This bill is about accountability and common sense,” said Jacques. “Any student dangerous enough to commit these serious crimes, and as a result held responsible in the adult system, should not be allowed anywhere near a sports team.”

"When tragedy strikes, we as a community have the ability to provide support for the victims and their families," stated Senator DiCeglie. "This bill increases accountability, and prohibits those who commit heinous crimes from participating in high-school sports. I am proud to work with Rep. Jacques to get this important legislation passed."

Both Jacques and DiCegile have promised they would crack down on accountability for all criminal activity.  This bill regarding Florida's students seems to be just one of many of their steps towards this goal.
