Support for Israel in its war with Hamas remains mostly bipartisan amidst other polarizing issues. In a recent example, Representatives Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Cory Mills (R-FL) have teamed up to crack down on Captagon, a drug used by the perpetrators of the Hamas terror attack of October 7th.
According to the Jewish Insider, Rep. Moskowitz and Rep. Mills highlighted the lucrative trade for the substance across the Middle East, especially for the Syrian Assad regime and Iranian proxy militias, with Syria alone earning $10 billion from their manufacturing and selling of Captagon.
Semafor described Captagon, which is a synthetic amphetamine that suppresses fear and anxiety, while evidently enhancing aggression. As a result, this is what allowed the Hamas militants to perform their horrific atrocities over their conscience, and Israeli Defense Force soldiers have found Captagon pills in the possession of captured or killed Hamas members.
Thus the bill introduced by Rep. Moskowitz and Rep. Mills calls for "greater interregional and intraregional coordination to counter the proliferation of Captagon," which means greater cooperation with American allies in the region and within our domestic agencies to coordinate efforts in disrupting the trade of the substance.
In a statement provided by the Jewish Insider, Moskowitz said, "I was horrified to learn that Captagon pills were found on the bodies of dead Hamas terrorists, allowing them to remain alert and restless as they slaughtered innocent men, women, and babies. This bipartisan proposal is a step towards cutting off this funding source [for the Syrian government and Hezbollah] and lessening Hamas’ capabilities to commit mass murder against our ally Israel again."
Similarly, Mills told the Insider, "As Israel’s strongest Western ally, the United States Government cannot turn a blind eye to how brutal dictatorships in the Middle East, like the Assad regime, are funded."
This is not the first time Moskowitz has teamed up with House Republicans to pursue foreign policy, as he teamed up with Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) in July to stiffen oil sanctions against Iran through the SHIP Act.
