U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz (D-Fl) has cosponsored a Republican-led House resolution to denounce Hamas’ Human Rights Violations.
The bill, filed by Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), specifically condemns Hamas' use of human shields as a contravention of international humanitarian law.
International humanitarian law, also known as the law of armed conflict, aims to protect the rights and dignity of civilian noncombatants.
Hamas raided Israeli territory to murder and kidnap innocent civilians on October 7th, 2023, and has subsequently used civilians and civilian infrastructure to shield themselves from Israeli retaliation.
Such acts by Hamas has led many to accuse them of gross violations of international humanitarian law.
The International Criminal Court (ICC), an international tribunal that seeks to prosecute individuals responsible for international crimes, has begun an investigation into the events.
Israel reportedly recently struck a hostage-exchange deal with Hamas that is to be executed within the coming hours.
Upon news of the deal, Representative Moskowitz derided those that claimed a ceasefire was essential in order for Hamas to agree to release their Israeli hostages.
“This is Great News. For those who called for a ceasefire without the release of Hostages as well, you were wrong,” said Moskowitz on X.
Israel will release over 100 Palestinian prisoners back into Gaza as part of the exchange deal.
The deal will include a temporary ceasefire of four days for the safe transfer of hostages and prisoners.
However, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has underscored Israel intends to resume their attempts to dismantle Hamas following the exchange deal.
“We are at war – and will continue the war,” said Prime Minister Netanyahu.
