Mast Calls for Bipartisanship After Mayorkas Changes Tune on Border

Representative Brian Mast (R-FL) is calling for bipartisanship after President Joe Biden (D) and his administration stated that there is an immediate need for a border wall.

Tackling immigration has been on the minds and the lips of politicians for decades, but not a lot of progress has been made on that front.

Building a wall across the southern border was one of former President Donald Trump’s (R) main campaign promises but he ran into a stubborn Congress that was eager to not give him total victory in that territory.

However, Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has changed his tune and gone against the rhetoric that Democrats have held since 2015.

In a blog post on his congressional website, Rep. Mast said “Democrats scoffed at [Trump], accusing him of being racist. Speaker Pelosi claimed a moral high ground saying that ‘a wall is an immorality,’ and Joe Biden promised he would not build ‘another foot of the wall.’”

He would go on to mention, “#OpenBorder policy was the official platform of the Democrats in Washington … until they realized it’s not popular. Then, one by one, Democrats started to change their tune and do a 180-degree turn.”

Rep. Mast continued, “The Biden Administration flip-flopped completely and said there is an immediate need for a border wall. The same people who have long argued President Trump’s border wall should be scrapped have finally realized that their political talking points are not adding up and the support from their base is crumbling down.”

With this in mind, the Florida congressman believes it’s time to “quit the political posturing” and bring legislation to build the wall in bipartisan fashion.

“I said it during my first year in office and I will say again: we need to build the wall. Now that we have a bipartisan consensus, let’s quit the political posturing and make sure we have a secure border that keeps our community and our country safe.”

In November, Mast was one of many Republicans in the House to call for Secretary Mayorkas’s impeachment or resignation.
