Florida Sues Biden Admin Over New Union Law

Share

Florida has once again renewed its rivalry with the Biden Administration after filing a new lawsuit accusing the federal government of withholding hundreds of millions of dollars for a new infrastructure project, due to a recently active state law that some deem, "anti-labor."

Signed into law on May 9, SB 256 would prevent unions representing transportation workers and other public sector employees from deducting union dues from the employees salaries.  Alternatively, employees would pay their own dues to unions, changing the method of monetary exchange.

Critics of the bill have asserted that the legislation serves more as a launch pad for Governor Ron DeSantis' (R-FL) presidential campaign, as the governor has had a lengthy rivalry with workers' unions and the law did not apply to first responders, a group that DeSantis gave very liberal bonuses to.

Attorney General Ashley Moody (R-FL) filed a lawsuit that asserted that the federal government is violating the federal law by threatening to withhold $800 million in federal grants unless a state panel grants waivers to Florida’s new union law.

"Florida passed laws to protect workers from being strong-armed by unions," said Moody. "Biden, intent on driving our country into the ground, continues to try to force states to implement his bad policies."

A spokesman for Secretary Pete Buttigieg (D) has declined to comment as there is ongoing litigation regarding the matter.
