Shortly after The Floridian reported that Florida Rep. Darren Soto (D) took $9,000 in campaign donations from embattled and indicted Sen. Bob Menendez, the congressman’s office sent out a statement calling for Sen. Menendez to resign, and said that Rep. Soto would be donating the money.
Rep. Soto will be donating the money to the “Homes for our Troops” charity by way of a check or online transfer.
There is a high probability that the money will not be donated using gold bars or coins.
“Rep. Soto is donating the $9,000 contribution to a veterans charity, Homes for our Troops. Given the seriousness of the allegations, Rep. Soto believes that Senator Menendez should resign,” stated Soto spokeswoman Belén Sassone.
Soto becomes the latest Democratic lawmaker to ask or demand that Menendez resign.
The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has placed Soto on their target list for 2024 and has been making a concerted effort to make the central Florida congressman’s reelection as uncomfortable as possible.
