After Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) filed a motion to vacate (now former) House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), the House of Representatives has officially ousted him from his seat.
By a vote of 216-210, McCarthy was voted out by a coalition of eight Republicans and 208 Democrats. Not a single Democrat voted for McCarthy. A total of seven representatives did not vote. This group included three Republicans (John Carter – TX, Lance Gooden – TX, and Anna Paulina Luna – FL) and four Democrats (Cori Bush – MO, Nancy Pelosi – CA, Mary Peltola – AK, and Emilia Sykes – OH).
Before the final vote that eventually removed McCarthy, there was a vote to table Rep. Gaetz’s motion entirely.
Freshman Representative Cory Mills (R-FL) was one of three Republicans to vote against tabling the motion but then voted to retain McCarthy.
