Trump Says DeSantis Made 'Terrible Mistake' With Florida's 6-Week Abortion ban

In an exclusive interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” former President Donald Trump stated that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signing of a 6-week Abortion ban measure into law was a “terrible mistake.

“I think what he (DeSantis) did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” said President Trump when asked if he would support a six-week abortion ban like the one Gov. DeSantis recently signed into law.

President Trump, before demonizing Democrats for supporting late-term abortions and “infanticide,” argued that for 52 years, both Republicans and Democrats have wanted the issue of abortion to be decided at the state level and not the federal.

“The radical people on this are really the  Democrats that say after five months, six months,  seven months, and eight months, and even after birth, you're allowed to terminate the baby, “ said President Trump.

Host Kristen Welker defiantly argued for the Democrats, stating that as a whole, “Democrats are not saying that.”

Trump believes that if and when he is reelected President, he will bring interested parties together to come to a compromise on an acceptable time limit for a woman to have an abortion, because “nobody wants to see abortions when you have a baby in the womb.”

When asked if he would support a 15-week ban on abortion, Trump stated,” I would sit down with both sides and I would negotiate something, and we'll end up with peace in that issue for the first time in 52 years.”

Welker argued that Democrats do not support late-term abortion, but Trump rebuked here defense, saying that states like New York have passed legislation to allow for late-term abortion, or as he put it, “allowed to kill the baby after birth.”

Currently, states like New York, California, New Jersey, Oregon, New Mexico, and Vermont, all allow for late-term abortion with some of these states having bans in place at 24-26 weeks of pregnancy, or 6-7 months.

Earlier this year, The Floridian asked Gov. DeSantis to comment on President Trump's remark that Florida's new abortion law was "too harsh."

“Protecting an unborn child when there’s the detectable heartbeat is something that almost probably 99% of pro-lifers support. It’s something that other states like Iowa under Governor Kim Reynolds have enacted and I think that as a Florida resident, [Trump] didn’t give an answer about would you have signed the heartbeat bill that Florida did, that had all the exceptions that people talk about the legislature put it in. I signed the bill. I was proud to do it. He would not answer whether he would sign it or not," said DeSantis.
