With a government shutdown looming at the end of the month, Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) made an appearance on “Mornings with Maria” to discuss his viewpoint on how Congress should navigate the treacherous waters ahead.

The Florida congressman relayed to the show host that “the rank and file hasn’t been given any direction” but that some ideas are beginning to gain traction – at least in Rep. Steube’s opinion.

“I think [Representative] Debbie Lesko (R-AZ) had a great idea. She said, let’s take the Limit, Save, Grow Act, the conservative bill that we passed to cut spending, conservative principles, every member of Congress voted for that. Couple that with H.R. (House Resolution) 2, which is our border package, and push that forward and send that to the Senate. That’s a conservative bill,” Rep. Steube stated. It cuts spending, it does the type of things that we need to do to get our economy back on track. The American people did not put us in charge of the House to do C.R.s (Continuing Resolution) with Democrats to fund the government. They put us in charge of the House to stand on American principles, to stand on good cuts in spending to bring back up our economy and shut down the border.”

The show’s host Maria Bartiromo then asked if the current proposed C.R. cuts funding or not.

Steube responded, saying that C.R.s in the past have increased spending over time and have been a part of the increased deficit, therefore rejecting the idea that a C.R. is the right move.

“Just to give you a quick reboot on what that (C.R.) is, we’ve gone from a $21 trillion deficit five years ago to a $33 trillion deficit. We put 40% on the debt just in the years Nancy Pelosi was Speaker. I don’t want to continue that…Why do a C.R.? Pass a conservative bill that cuts spending, that funds the border wall, and shuts down the border wall, and does the conservative things that Americans put us in charge of the House to do. That’s what I think we got elected to come up here and do and that’s what I support,” said Steube.

Congressman Steube represents Florida’s 17th Congressional District.
