Debbie Mucarsel-Powell
Florida Senator Rick Scott (R) now has a reelection rival in Florida Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (D), and the Florida Democrat is looking to oust the former Governor of Florida. In the 2020 presidential election, Rep. Mucarsel-Powell came up short in her 2020 congressional reelection bid, but she’s now banking on Republican fatigue in the state to catapult her to the Senate. According to Mucarsel-Powell, she can win her race because Florida “is not a red state.”
The odds are not in Mucarsel-Powell’s favor as the state has grown redder since the election of President Donald Trump (R) in 2016. Despite statistics showing that Democratic influence in the state is shrinking smaller and smaller, Mucarsel-Powell vows to unseat Senator Scott.
Over the weekend, the senatorial hopeful attended Ruth Lists’ annual “She’s the Change” conference, which supports female candidates who support abortion rights, and she discussed the campaign she’s running against Scott.
“I’m not relying on the state party, I’m not relying on the [Democratic] Senatorial Campaign Committee. I’m going to run a campaign on my own… but I’m going to make it impossible for the state and federal party to not invest in this state,” she said.
In speaking about Republicans, Mucarsel-Powell warned that they’re using “misinformation” to distract voters through “populism” to appeal to Latinos. Moreover, she criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), accusing him of scaring voters, citing his “election police force” that announced several arrests for voter fraud.
Mucarsel-Powell also took issue with the Republican label of “socialist,” questioning that “Rick Scott is asking for federal funding for disaster relief. Is that socialism?”
Admitting that she has “always stood on the side of freedom, liberty, and democracy,” she issued a stern warning to the incumbent.
“Don’t ever question where I stand with socialist dictators who have completely choked the economic, political and social systems in Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Cuba.”
