The stage is set for a 2024 race for Miami-Dade County Mayor. Mayor Daniella Levine Cava now faces three challengers for positions. The latest candidate is the two-term Mayor of Miami Lakes, Mayor Manny Cid.

Mayor Levine Cava won the mayorship in the 2020 election with 54% of the vote compared to Mayor Esteban Bovo’s 46%.

Mayor Cid filed the paperwork to join the race at the end of last week, and he joins two other challengers in a non-partisan race. In August 2024, all candidates will face each other in an election, and if no candidate receives more than 50% of the voter, the contest would be voted on again in November when the country will also be voting for the president in the general election.

Cid is a two-term mayor of a Republican stronghold, and he now looks to expand Republican control by turning Miami-Dade County red. In early August, Cid had signaled that he was leaning towards running for the top post in Miami-Dade County given that he had reached his term limit as Mayor of Miami Lakes.

“I’m definitely leaning toward running for county Mayor,” Cid said, adding “most definitely. The more I go around the county and talk to people, the more I realize there is only one position (in which) I can solve all these issues for our residents.”

Cid cites the successes of Miami Lakes as an example of what Miami-Dade County could benefit from.

“We have all these new developments and value coming into our community,” Cid explained, further explaining that “it’s time we help our residents, especially in an area where they’re paying high inflation and insurance costs.”

“That’s what’s in our control while we also provide great services. The Miami Lakes model really bodes well for all of Miami-Dade,” he called.
