Republican Lawmakers Continue to Rally Behind Trump After 4th Indictment

Shortly after former President Donald Trump was arrested and booked into the Fulton County, Georgia jail on state RICO charges, congressional lawmakers across the country expressed their support for the former president, including Florida Rep. Kat Cammack (R).

Rep. Cammack, who is one of a handful of members of Florida’s Republican congressional delegation that has not endorsed President Trump, stated on ‘X’ that the Georgia case against President Trump was nothing more than a “Witch-hunt.”

Cammack’s show of support could be seen as very telling, considering that she told The Floridian that she was still very much “undecided” when asked about the race a few months ago on the steps of the Capitol in Washington.

In addition, Cammack somewhat expressed her support again for Trump shortly after the first Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee, where she entered the “Spin Room” to speak to the media about the race.

“Those who decided to start using indictments, prosecutors & even mug shots as weapons in a political campaign have unleashed a destructive new era in American politics. Now, for years to come our criminal justice system will be used to target candidates in both parties & the harm this will do to America will take a long time to fix,” stated Sen. Marco Rubio

“Today is another dark day in U.S. history. A day when We The People & the world, will witness the continued weaponization of the justice system against a political opponent, former POTUS, & leading candidate for the upcoming presidential election. This is a travesty of justice,” said Rep. Byron Donalds, who has endorsed Trump over DeSantis

Governor DeSantis has only been able to garner one congressional endorsement in Florida.

Rep. Laurel Lee (R), who served as DeSantis’s Secretary of State, is the Governor’s sole endorsee.

In the past, when Florida congressional lawmakers were falling in line to endorse President Trump, DeSantis did not call members to ask for endorsements or try to keep them from backing Trump.

His staff, particularly Ryan Tyson, was the person tasked to make the calls.

Most, if not all of the lawmakers in Florida who endorsed Trump, either received a phone call from Trump or were told in person.

Trump still holds a significant lead over DeSantis in all the national and state-level public opinion polls, but DeSantis’ debate performance may have moved the needle for him.

While DeSantis did what he had to do during the debate and was able to communicate his vision for America, no one on the stage ran away with the win, or had a “break out” performance.

The second GOP presidential debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan library in Simi Valley, California on September 27.
