Carolina Amesty
The Orlando Sentinel's deeply personal attacks on State Rep. Carolina Amesty (R) have made waves around the Florida political scene. NowRep. Amesty is responding to the attacks, disclosing alleged inappropriate behavior from the media outlet that has obstructed her life and the lives of her family.
The Orlando Sentinel published an article detailing accusations that Amesty has been dishonest with the public about her involvement with different businesses, including a small Christian University that she allegedly filed false information under, and failed to properly pay her taxes for the property she lives on.
Amesty called the article a, "hit piece," in a fiery Tweet, claiming, "The hit piece the Orlando Sentinel published today amounts to nothing more than a litany of lies, innuendo, and outrageous misrepresentations." Amesty then divulged some of the things she is now accusing the Orlando Sentinel of doing in their investigation of her.
"For months, the Orlando Sentinel has resorted to disgusting tactics to harass my family, friends, and acquaintances - including my fiancé's former spouse from many years ago and even a small dollar donor to my campaign - to see if anyone had anything to say about me."
The worst detail Amesty detailed was that the reporters allegedly showed up to her family's school and photographed children without the consent of their parents. The state representative then responded to the accusations of fraud, contending she would have addressed these had the media not acted the way she believes they did. The Congresswoman then called our reporters by name.
"The bottom line is that so-called journalists Leslie Postal and Annie Martin simply cannot stand the sight of a strong, independent-minded young Latina Republican (or her family apparently). We can all remember a day when the Sentinel was an objective newspaper. It is unfortunate that they have decided to remain relevant by becoming the PR arm of the Democratic Party. Until that changes, I do not see why any Republican elected official should ever interact with them in any manner." - Carolina Amesty on August 8th, 2023.
The accusations from both sides beg the important question of what the core mission of the media is in the public. Should they serve as fair and impartial to all elected officials, or be hungry for the truth? Both are certainly possible.
