Despite working on bipartisan legislation in the past and portraying himself as a moderate Democrat member of Congress, the NRCC believes that US Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL) is not only an extreme Leftist, but will be a vulnerable target in the 2024 elections. The NRCC has just blasted Rep. Soto over voting against veterans' healthcare funding.
This month Rep. Soto came together with US Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) to introduce the Protect Patriot Spouses Act, a bill designed to stop deportations of those who are married military service members. However, Republicans are seemingly not buying the centrist persona Soto seems to have adopted.
In the past Soto has publicly challenged Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) on waging his, "Culture war," claiming the governor is failing Florida. Soto has specifically faced off with the governor on book banning, defending the maintenance of books in public schools that Florida conservatives allege contain pornographic material.
The NRCC has now made the Democrat lawmaker the target of their 2024 sights after a number of votes in the US House. The congressman was reported to have voted against funding veterans’ health care and veterans’ benefits — 13 days after he voted to block pay raises for active duty military.
“Soto has betrayed veterans and active duty troops. Soto votes the extreme Democrat party line even when that means targeting the health care and benefits veterans earned serving our country in uniform — or blocking pay raises for active duty troops.” – NRCC Spokeswoman Delanie Bomar stated in regard to Soto.
The NRCC is not new to blasting Darren Soto. In an NRCC ad this year, the video blasted Democrats at large during debt ceiling negotiations where Democrats were charged with, ""jacking up inflation to historic highs" and then "refusing to solve the spending crisis they created." Rep. Soto can briefly be seen twice in the ad at the 10-second and 24-second mark, suggesting he favors current spending policies Republicans seek to curb.
